What does every guy like in their place? Fish tanks because we can be entertained by the smallest thing (much like our best friend the dog). The downside to fish tanks are how much you have to spend and take time on the upkeep of the water. Just like most things that require that much attention, they typically fall by the wayside. So what did Ecosphere do? They created the fun of being able to watch stuff interact in the water without having to really put much effort into keeping it up.
The Ecosphere is a self-sustaining ecosystem that also happens to incorporate a very modern and cool look to it. Consider this an option for your apartment or your desk in that giant office of yours (I’m sure you could set it on the side of the McDonalds cash register). The cool thing about the Ecosphere is that it can actually teach you a few things but we all know that learning is dumb so you can ignore that upside. So after you get the Ecosphere you will start to notice all of the microorganisms starting to create their own self sustaining ecosystem.
You might want to try and select different sizes that work best for the design of your place. They have plain spheres or tear drop shaped glass cases which is nice. You can even get one that looks like an ice cube (but we recommend not throwing it into the freezer). The shrimp, algae, bacteria and other organisms will kick into high gear and you will start to see just how crazy your new ecosystem can get. So you can become the new leader of a free world (and by free, it is enclosed in a glass case) and start to show them just how much fun you can have on a Saturday night. Because we know they will watch you sadly playing your PS3 and trying to talk to them through the glass case.
1/3/2013 Interview with Ecosphere
Could you tell us your name and your role at Ecosphere Associates, Inc.? Chris Kose: graphic designer, office guy, shipping manager. We are a small company and we all were lots of hats.
How did the concept behind the Ecospheres come about? What brought the whole concept about? The EcoSphere is certified NASA spin off technology that came about from the Jet Propulsion Lab in California. To boil it down, doctors and scientists were testing various small scale models of complete sealed living quarters for simple plant and life forms. Out of this, came a hand-blown glass vessel with containing algae and a fern like plant. This technology was improved upon and turned into the consumer product, known as the EcoSphere.
For those of us that are scientifically challenged (our whole user base) can you explain the details behind how the Ecosphere works/operates? The EcoSphere is a completely closed ecosystem. What this means is that everything the EcoSphere needs to survive (average life span is between 2 and 3 years) is already inside the EcoSphere. The user doesn’t (and really can’t) need to change the water or feed the EcoSphere. All that is needed is a comfortable room temperature and light. The light keeps the algae growing which feeds the shrimp and breaks down the shrimp waste. There are a multitude of microorganisms and bacteria inside the EcoSphere that do these same tasks, just on a smaller scale.
If somebody is trying to decide whether or not to get an Ecosphere, what would you say to convince them that your product is awesome and they should get it? The best thing about the EcoSphere is that it is the world’s best no-maintenance pet. They are fun to look at (especially while on hold) and work great in an office setting since they do not need sun light. The EcoSphere is also handmade, right here in our lab in Tucson, Arizona.
We noticed that Ecospheres is a family run business… How is that dynamic workplace? It’s great. We all were many hats here and can crank out a great deal of EcoSpheres during the holidays. While I am not related to Dan and Michel Harmony (the owners) I really am part of the family. Working here 13 years sort of does that. Our “newest” employee has been here almost 10 years.
Any future plans for Ecospheres? New products coming out that you can give us some previews of? We are consistently making small improvements to the EcoSphere, most of these the customer would not notice, but other than that, not really. We do have another product line called TXTR-LITE Flexible Stone Veneer (www.txtr-lite.com). This is not related to the EcoSpheres, other than being a unique product. We also have a product called BYOES, which stands for Build Your Own EcoSystem. The BYOES is a do-it-yourself kit version of the EcoSphere. They are made with the same technology as the EcoSphere, but they are not a completely closed ecosystem. The website for the BYOES is www.byoes.com
