As you can correctly guess, we are all gamers here at Gadgets 4 Guys. We love video games and enjoy playing them. Xbox or Playstation is an ongoing argument whenever we have downtime in the office. It looks like with the different KickStarter campaigns, we might have to open that discussion up even more. There is currently a KickStarter campaign for a very cool and innovative gaming solution that is packaged basically into the controller.
The innovators over at GameStick looked at the current mobile gaming market and realized people have applied open development for games and it has blown up. Unfortunately, the amount of people that have TV’s that use it for gaming is a much different ratio than those with cell phones that have games downloaded to it. You simply take the HDMI connection (we believe it connects via bluetooth) and can start immediately playing games. So they took care of the portable aspect and also took the requirement of having a giant console dominate the shelves around your TV be taken away which should make your wife very happy.
The biggest question we had after looking at the GameStick console was the quality of the games. They could have a very cool and innovative idea but if the games sucked, so did the product. It sounds like they knew this issue and tried to counter it by having Android be the underlying system that developers would build games on. They have even partnered with at least one studio and also done an excellent job of getting developers excited about this. They have identified several hundred titles that they plan to make GameStick compatible which is definitely a good start.
The fact that this “console” (that term might completely disappear if this product catches on) is so cheap ($79.99) it could be very appealing to mass amounts of people. We aren’t sure what the multiplayer functionality will be but will update everybody once we snag an interview with one of the GameStick team members. Gaming will definitely change more and more over the next 5-10 years and we think this is a pretty good indication of that.
