So we close out our series of ergonomic office items and accessories with the SomaFit Synchro office chair. The guys over at SomaFit sent us this free demo to try out and also broke down some of the important aspects of maintaining good posture and having the right chair when you’re sitting for long periods of time. We went and found some interesting facts about sitting all day and what it might do to us (SOURCE):
You might have heard the saying, “sitting is the new smoking”. We’re not sure about quantifying those two things but do realize the importance of getting a good chair. If you’re currently looking for an office chair, we are shouting at you to GET OUT OF THE WALMART OFFICE CHAIR AISLE! We’re painting with some pretty broad strokes but if you plan on sitting for longer than an hour a day, we recommend you start considering a higher end chair. The SomaFit Synchro chair could be that high end option.
The reason we wanted to highlight this first was because it was the feature that we loved the most about the Synchro. The E-Fit mechanism is what SomaFit calls the “set it and forget it” feature. You go through and pick out the chair height, seat positions, angles and more that you want and the E-Mechanism makes it to where you don’t have to touch a thing. You can go from a full recline to an upright sitting position and the E-Mechanism will hold everything together.
So you have the standard height change of the chair. We were surprised at how high the chair goes which could make this chair pretty desirable for taller individuals that can’t find a chair that goes high enough for them. I’m just over 6′ 1 and when I put the Synchro at its full height, my feet just barely were able to touch the floor. It also lowered too a pretty solid level too so the chair should work for anybody of varying heights.
The synchronous recline feature was another favorite of ours. What in the world is synchronous recline? Basically for every inch you recline the seat, the back reclines 2″. What that does is naturally keep your body at an open angle while maintaining back support at whatever sitting position you want.
We also encourage you to look at all of the different color and/or fabric options that SomaFit offers. Our demo was the gray version and we loved the look of it as it went well with our modern looking office. There are a ton of options and you can pick the color that best matches your office (or personality!).
As we state in our YouTube video review, chairs are a lot like beds. You can’t go out and by a $50 mattress and expect it to provide a good night’s sleep. You also can’t get a mattress without discovering what your body needs (hard, soft, support, adjustment options, etc.). The same goes for an office chair that you’re going to put a significant amount of usage on. Discover what your natural tendencies are (do you slouch? do you switch a lot from reclined to upright?) and do the research on what SomaFit chair will work for you.
We’re slouchers when we sit at our desks which is what made the SomaFit Synchro the perfect chair for us. Support at every angle and being able to quickly and easily adjust from a reclined position to an upright one. The price might seem a little higher when you compare it to the $100 options at traditional retail outlets but you’ll likely miss out on the ergonomic aspects that SomaFit brings. The material also seems to be much more durable and higher end which should allow you to keep the chair much longer than those cheaper options.
People spend thousands of dollars on a mattress because they know the time that they put on that mattress (and how important it is to their back health). It is that view that should carry over to picking an office chair that will encourage you to realize that $500 for an office chair isn’t that much of an expense. You might even adopt our viewpoint: a high end office chair is actually a health investment.
