What are some of the hazards of going to an actual gym for a workout? We’re not talking about risk of a potential injury while running on a treadmill but other hazards that lie in wait. It will begin when you enter the locker room to change into your workout clothes. The old naked guys will be walking around way too freely while the hairy guy has no problem dropping his trousers before getting onto the scale so he “can really get an accurate weight”. As you proceed out to the actual gym, you have to make a decision of whether you will hit the cardio machines, weight machines or play basketball. If you play basketball, you will look like an idiot as you will quickly realize that your gym has And1 Mixtape All-Stars playing at it and quickly give up. After that, you will make your way over to the weights and realize that you’re a) the smallest guy in the world and b) there is a whole other level of unspoken gym rules you never knew about. After you forget to rerack and get yelled at for doing so the third time, you make your way up to the suburban wife area (treadmills). While less intimidating, you can’t help but feel that all the women around you are staring at you like some kind of perv. Are we exaggerating a little bit? Maybe. But the gym has truly become its own ecosystem and some of us would rather not deal with it.
One of the first steps to freeing yourself from a monthly gym membership is getting a few necessary workout products to help you facilitate a solid at-home workout. The guys over at PowerBlock were so confident that their product should be our recommended first product you buy for at home workouts that they sent us a demo of their U-70 Adjustable Dumbbells. While we all know that you have to do curls for the girls, we hated the fact that a standard dumbbell set took up so much physical space and was clunky to adjust weight on. PowerBlock changed that by providing you with starting weight sets that range from 5-40 lbs in each hand. Once you get those biceps going, you can even expand out to 60 and even 70 lbs per hand. That means your shrimpy roommate can use them at the 10 lbs weight he’s comfortable with while you rip off a solid 80+ lbs curl. The best part isn’t just he weight but the compact design it comes in. With all weight attached, these things are less than a foot in length, and just a little over 1/2 a foot in width and height. This range of weight would normally take up half a wall.
Finally, the mechanism that PowerBlock has created to adjust between these weights is what we fell in love with the most. While there are other adjustable dumbbells out there, PowerBlock has created a really unique way to adjust. You simply take the pin out, move it to the level of weight you desire, and insert it in. The dual pin will naturally lock into place (no screws or other attachments necessary) and you can start lifting immediately. If the U-70 doesn’t get you to the weight you need, PowerBlock also offers the U-90 that starts with weight options of 50, 70, and 90 lbs (with an expansion pack to 125) per hand. Do us a favor and only order that if you feel confident that you won’t have to ask the delivery man to help you get it inside. While the price seems a bit steep, you will understand why when you pick up the weights. They’re solidly made and backed with a lifetime home use warranty.
